Students of the Department of Taxation, school of Business Studies in Auchi Polytechnic have on Wednesday held a one day excursion exercise at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Supervised by authorities of the department -headed by Mrs. Momodu Waseela, the students met with the Management Staff of FIRS who brought them up to speed with a view to understanding the nitty gritty of taxation.
Mr. Akhimien Evans the Tax Controller of the FIRS office noted that mostly in our clime, tax laws are not complied with and encouraged students to take the message home to their parents -stating that tax is important to the extent that taxes are revenue available to Government to create the necessary infrastructure requisite for development.
He said that although many factors discourage people from paying taxes, these factors are not excusable as the only way citizens of a country can justifiably hold the government accountable is when they pay taxes.
Issues of company income tax and other taxation oriented matters took center stagenas the students were made to understand the reasons why businesses among others are required by law to pay taxes.
The students took notes, paying attention to every detail as was being provided by the resource persons who took turns to furnish them with insightful information packaged to truly enable the students understand how taxation exercises are done in reality and better their learning experience.
A practical session was held where the students had to solve a tax assignment to prove that they have been following.
Result of this exercise showed that every participating student was not only in sync with the facilitators, they enjoyed every minute of the seeming learning journey through the steering of professionals in the field of taxation.
