In a significant stride towards reducing maternal mortality rates in Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Muhammed Lecky, the Galadima of Auchi Sacred Kingdom, has commended the Federal Ministry of Health’s Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Maternal Care (CEmOC) project. Speaking exclusively to The Community’s Eye on Èmhọ Neytọ (a weekly live podcast that addresses communal burning issues locally), Dr. Lecky highlighted the importance of the initiative in addressing the medical needs of pregnant women, particularly those requiring Cesarean Sections (C-sections) across all senatorial districts in the country.
Dr. Lecked noted that the CEmOC project was introduced to reduce complications and deaths associated with pregnancy and childbirth. “The high mortality rate among women during childbirth necessitated this intervention,” he explained while noting that hitherto the launching of the scheme, the country ranked as one of the highest in Maternal Mortality across the world -expressing hopes that this will soon be a thing of the past.
He said, “The CEmOC project is designed to ensure that pregnant women, especially those who may require surgical interventions like C-sections, receive timely and quality medical care.”
One of the most remarkable aspects of the CEmOC scheme is that it comes at zero cost to beneficiaries. Pregnant women are encouraged to attend antenatal services regularly to ensure they are monitored to know if and when they are eligible for the service. Once identified as candidates for C-sections, they are promptly attended to, reducing the risk of complications and fatalities.
Dr. Lecky revealed that Auchi, a bustling town in Edo State, was initially excluded from the CEmOC project. However, after reaching out to the relevant authorities at the NHIA, the Edo State University Teaching Hospital (EDSUTH), formerly known as the General Hospital, was designated as a CEmOC service provider. “This is a significant milestone for Auchi and its environs,” Dr. Lecky stated. “Having a CEmOC unit in EDSUTH means that pregnant women in this region now have access to life-saving obstetric care.”
While acknowledging that one service unit per senatorial district may seem limited, Dr. Lecky emphasized that it is a promising start. “Pregnancy and labor take time, and having even one dedicated facility can make a huge difference,” he said. “This initiative will significantly reduce the financial burden on families who would otherwise have to pay out-of-pocket for C-sections in facilities not covered by the NHIA’s CEmOC scheme.”
Dr. Lecky urged couples to prioritize quality medical attention during pregnancy to ensure the health and safety of both mother and child. “Pregnancy is a critical period that requires careful monitoring and expert care,” he said. “By seeking timely medical attention, we can prevent complications and ensure that both mother and child come out healthy after childbirth.”
He also expressed optimism about the future of the CEmOC project, describing it as a game-changer in Nigeria’s efforts to improve maternal health outcomes. “This initiative is a step in the right direction. It not only saves lives but also reduces the financial strain on families, making quality healthcare more accessible to all,” he added.
The inclusion of EDSUTH in the CEmOC project is a testament to the power of advocacy and collaboration. Obstetrics and gynecology constitute major programs and departments in major hospitals. They are funded predominantly through a combination of private and subsidized public funds in order to ensure sustainability, economic viability in operations, and prompt quality of healthcare services. To finance this operation, funds should be budgeted and made available through a combination of private-public partnership. The federal government through the national health service insurance finance (NHIA) is not equipped to respond to emergencies resulting from numerous c-sections and complicated pregnancies. Incidences of morbidity and mortality can be overwhelming and they put a strain on limited revenue sources. They require specialized technologies and tools. In addition, medical laboratories with state of the art instrumentations and technology experts would be required to exercise their knowledge. The routine monitoring, test and data validation will have to be conducted by certified peer reviewers and electronically stored. Additional nurses may need to be hired and trained. While the medical and paramedical staff would definitely have standardized protocols in place to conduct operations, it is the availability of reagents, chemicals, supplies, instruments, portable water and power supply that begs the question of the efficacy for these programs and the functionality of emergency operation units. It appears to be a feel good project which when examined thoroughly is full of emptiness unless critically examined and enforced. You have played a noble and honorable role.
