On Saturday, March 8, market women and youths in Auchi, the headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area in Edo State, staged a fierce protest against the ongoing reconstruction of Ughelle Market. The demonstrators expressed deep dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency surrounding the project, accusing the contractor and local authorities of excluding them from critical decisions about the market’s upgrade.

The protest erupted as contractors moved in to commence demolition work, prompting a heated confrontation. Market women and community youths voiced their grievances, stating that the details of the contract, including the project design and legal documents, had not been made available to them. They claimed their involvement was limited to the distribution of registration forms, which were sold for ₦10,000 each. According to the arrangement, only those who purchased, filled, and submitted the forms would be eligible to rent shops once the project was completed.
A cross-section of market women and men described the exercise as exploitative, arguing that it would further impoverish them and their dependents, who rely on daily commercial activities at the market for survival. Many expressed frustration over the lack of consultation and the short notice given to vacate the market premises.
In response to the protests, Sir Bonvist, the Liaison Officer between the Local Government and the community on the market rebuilding project, defended the process. He stated that all parties involved in the market were promptly informed and carried along. According to him, the project was initially scheduled for 2024 but was delayed due to the electioneering period. The former Local Government Chairman reportedly advised postponing the project to avoid political misinterpretation, as it could be seen as favoring the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bonvist explained that all necessary documents were available and that a foundation-laying ceremony had taken place with the approval of community authorities. He also noted that Chief Alhaji H.M Momoh, Daudu 1 of Auchi and other palace chiefs had insisted that the rent fees for the new shops must be affordable for market traders, a condition he claimed the developer, Alade Company, agreed to. However, Bonvist expressed surprise that despite being given a two-week notice to vacate the premises, the market people had not complied.
On the flip side, Mrs. Susan Rafat Garry, the chairperson of shop owners in the market, disputed Bonvist’s claims, stating that she and other market stakeholders were never consulted about the project. She revealed that the first indication of the market’s redevelopment came when Bonvist brought registration forms for sale. According to her, the sudden appearance of armed law enforcement officers and Edo State security personnel to commence demolition work shocked the market community. She emphasized that many traders depend solely on the market for their livelihood and appealed for more time to adjust to the new reality.
Mrs. Garry accused Bonvist of being in a hurry to displace them, exacerbating their struggles in an already depressed economy. Her sentiments were echoed by other community stakeholders, including Alhaji Jabir Giwa and Mallam Abass Usman, who questioned the contractors on-site about the project’s details. They demanded clarity on the project design, duration, and legal backing, warning that the lack of transparency would fuel resistance not only from market traders but also from the community’s youths.
The protest highlights growing tensions between the market community and local authorities over the lack of transparency and inclusivity in the market reconstruction project. The traders and youths are calling for full disclosure of the project’s details and greater involvement in the decision-making process. They argue that the project, while aimed at upgrading the market, must not come at the expense of their livelihoods.
As the standoff continues, the situation underscores the need for dialogue and collaboration between the government, developers, and the market community to ensure that development projects are implemented in a manner that benefits all stakeholders.
