Security: ESSC Nabs 3 Suspected Kidnappers

In a significant victory against crime, the Edo State Security Corp has apprehended three young men in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, following numerous complaints from residents about the high rate of kidnapping in the area.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the Commander of the Edo State Security Corp, retired Commissioner of Police Friday Ibadin, detailed the operation. He explained that his men responded swiftly to a distress call from a woman who reported that kidnappers had invaded her residence in Uromi. The woman, Mrs. Ufuha Rita, managed to hide in the bush while contacting the security forces. The Corp’s rapid response team rescued her, provided her with a safe location, and promptly apprehended the suspects as the victim identified them.

Ibadin noted that his men arrested three out of the seven young men involved in the attempted kidnapping. The suspects have been identified as Asene Ogah (49 years old), Ibhafidon Eric (29 years old), and Ekpu Godfrey (44 years old). The Commander issued a stern warning to other criminals in the state, declaring that Edo would be inhospitable to them unless they relocate.

“We have received numerous complaints from Esan land about frequent kidnappings and other criminal activities. Following these complaints, we mobilized our men to embark on patrol and bush combing in the area three days ago,” Ibadin said.

He recounted the rescue operation, stating, “On our way to Esan land, exactly at Ugoneki in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, we received a distress call from Mrs. Ufuha Rita, who identified herself as the victim. She informed us that kidnappers were in her house, sent by the leader of the Esan Awareness group, created by one Mr. Bruce who lives in Sweden.”

After rescuing Mrs. Ufuha, the security team escorted her to a safe place. She then guided the officers to the various houses of the suspects, leading to the arrest of three individuals who attempted to kidnap her. Mrs. Ufuha expressed her gratitude to the Edo State Security Corp for their swift action and called on relevant security agencies to protect her from the Esan Awareness group, which she claims has been involved in increasing criminal activities in the area.

The arrested suspects have made past revelations of their kidnapping activities. Ekpu Godfrey, one of the suspects, confessed to having been involved in kidnappings in the past but claimed to have ceased such activities. During the arrest, two locally made pump-action guns were found in their possession.

Commander Ibadin emphasized that the three suspects would be handed over to the police for further investigation into the alleged kidnappings in Uromi. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration among security agencies, promising to work closely with sister agencies to ensure the safety of Edo State.

“There is a law backing the Edo State Security Corp as a group, and any other security outfit, organ, or agency in the state must get approval here as we are the approving body. All the security bodies being constituted by Mr. Bruce are illegal,” Ibadin stated.

The community remains hopeful that such decisive actions will deter criminal activities and restore peace and security to Esan land. The Edo State Security Corp’s efforts in combating crime underscore the importance of swift and coordinated responses to distress calls and the need for continued support from the government and the public.
