TCE Reels Out Challenges Facing Education in Auchi Public Schools

A cursory look at most schools around us has taught me that teaching which was once a noble profession that teachers of old took pride in doing has now become less attractive in Auchi Sacred Kingdom, the headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

As The Community’s Eye , I have come to the conclusion that several factors have contributed and are still contributing to this inglorious decline.These include poor welfare packages for teachers, inadequate remuneration despite persistent inflation as well as poor and most times unconducive working conditions in public schools.

Ad:

Additionally, what is more worrying is that many teachers in these schools are not professionals but vocational workers who have taken up teaching due to a lack of alternative job opportunities. Where there are no teachers, I have seen quite a few persons come to teach on the basis of valunteering -which does not really give the teacher the requisite time and resources to offer quality and the kind of mentoring that some of us got from teachers of old -God bless their souls.

To explain the dire nature of this downward trajectory in the academic foundation of our community, here are some dire disadvantages the situation portends to the academic growth of our children:

1. Lack of Professionalism: When teachers lack professional training, the quality of education suffers. Untrained teachers may struggle with curriculum delivery, classroom management, and effective teaching methodologies, leading to poor educational experiences for pupils/students.

2. Low Motivation and Engagement: Teachers who are demotivated by poor welfare and remuneration are less likely to be enthusiastic and committed to their roles. This can result in a lack of engagement with students, reducing the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes.

Ad:

3. High Turnover Rates: Poor working conditions and inadequate pay often lead to high turnover rates among teachers. Frequent changes in teaching staff can disrupt the continuity of education and affect students’ learning progress.

4. Insufficient Resources: Poor working environments often mean a lack of necessary teaching aids and resources. This hinders teachers’ ability to deliver comprehensive lessons and limits students’ opportunities for hands-on learning and exploration.

5. Decreased Student Performance: Ultimately, the combination of untrained teachers, low motivation, high turnover rates, and insufficient resources can lead to decreased academic performance among students. This affects their overall educational development and future opportunities.

Ad:

Looking at the above, one cannot be far from the truth to say thay we are in trouble. So, what can be done as urgent solutions to this indentified problem?

1. Improving Welfare Packages and Remuneration:
-Competitive Salaries: Increase teachers’ salaries to make the profession more attractive and competitive. Adequate remuneration will motivate teachers to perform better and stay longer in the profession.
-Benefits and Incentives: Introduce benefits such as health insurance, housing allowances, and performance-based incentives to improve teachers’ welfare and job satisfaction.

2. Professional Development:
-Training Programs: Provide regular training and professional development opportunities for teachers to enhance their skills and knowledge. This includes workshops, seminars, and certification courses.
-Mentorship: Establish mentorship programs where experienced and trained educators can guide and support less experienced teachers.

3. Improving Working Conditions:
-Infrastructure: Invest in improving school infrastructure, including classrooms, libraries, and laboratories. Ensure that schools have adequate teaching aids and learning materials.
-Supportive Environment: Create a supportive working environment that encourages collaboration among teachers and provides them with the necessary administrative and emotional support.

4. Attracting Qualified Professionals:
-Recruitment Initiatives: Implement targeted recruitment initiatives to attract qualified professionals to the teaching profession. This may include partnerships with teacher training institutions and offering scholarships for aspiring teachers.
-Recognition and Prestige: Elevate the status of the teaching profession by recognizing and rewarding outstanding teachers. Public acknowledgment of their contributions can restore pride in the profession.

5. Community Involvement:
-Parental Engagement: Encourage active involvement of parents and the community in the education process. This can foster a supportive environment for both teachers and students.
-Partnerships: Forge partnerships with NGOs, private sector organizations, and government agencies to support education initiatives and provide additional resources.

By addressing these issues urgently and comprehensively, Auchi Sacred Kingdom can revitalize its education system, ensuring that children receive the quality education they deserve.
