War Against Gender Based Violence: FCDO Resourcing Change Project Concludes with a Grand Closing Ceremony in Edo State
Kadiri, J.E. |Auchi, Edo State.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Resourcing Change Project, a three-year initiative aimed at combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and empowering women and young girls, culminated in a vibrant closing ceremony on Thursday, the 27th of February. Held in Auchi, the Headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, the ceremony brought together key stakeholders, community leaders, and beneficiaries to celebrate the project’s successes and reflect on its impact.
It was graced by notable dignitaries, including Hon. Valentine Okhuiliaghwe, Acting Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Mrs. Sharon Adebayo of the National Orientation Agency, a representative of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Hajia Dr. Mariam Obomeghie Ezolome, the programme coordinator. Also in attendance were representatives from the Nigerian Police, Customs, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Army, alongside community stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project. His Royal Highness, Alhaji Aliru H. Momoh, Ikelebe III, the Otaru of Auchi Sacred Kingdom, was represented by Alhaji Chief H.M. Momoh, the Daudu 1 of Auchi, and Chief Alhaji Yahya Dirisu, the Odwebho of Auchi.
The FCDO Resourcing Change Project, implemented by the Global Women for Quality and Sustainable Development Initiative (GWSD) with support from SAFERWORLD and the Women International League for Peace and Freedom Nigeria, focused on eradicating GBV and fostering peaceful, violence-free families. Over the past three years, the project utilized various communication channels, including radio, television, social media, and face-to-face meetings, to raise awareness about GBV, its consequences, and solutions. It also provided empowerment opportunities for women and young girls, equipping them with the tools to address issues that often lead to violence.
Hajia Mariam, the programme coordinator, highlighted the project’s achievements during her speech. She emphasized that the initiative had significantly reduced GBV cases in the areas where it was implemented, attributing this success to the sustained awareness campaigns and community engagement efforts. She also commended the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members, for their unwavering support throughout the project’s duration.
The closing ceremony was a colorful and entertaining event, featuring drama presentations, local dance performances, and cultural displays. These activities underscored the importance of fostering harmonious, violence-free families for the betterment of communities and society at large. Certificates of participation were awarded to stakeholders and partners who contributed to the project’s success, encouraging them to continue championing its objectives.
