Speaking to ABS’ Fadilat and Rukky on Thursday, a good number of buyers lamented how low their buying power has declined as a result of the incessant increment in the price of goods in the market as sellers corroborated this in their claim that sales have become low and slow.

A look at the price of Garri was the focus as many claimed that the consumable has become too expensive for the common man to purchase.

According to one madam Nima, a Garri seller, a rubber of Garri currently sells for as high as #1,600 as against the price of #500 for which the same commodity was sold a few years ago.

“I’m currently selling a rubber for #1,600.

“It’s difficult to make sales because people don’t patronize me the way it was 5 years ago when Garri was #500 per rubber.” she said.

Many other sellers of Garri in the market corroborated this claim -fearing that the price might go up given the spate at which inflation is gaining height.

Identified simply as Oga Jona, a buyer who came to purchase some items in the market spoke dispationately about what he described as a wicked increment that is seemingly mete out as some form of punishment for the poor.

“It appears as if we are being punished for voting in the current government.

“Since its inception, inflation has heightened and you can imagine how common Garri can no longer be seen as common.

“I cannot even boast of using #50,000 to get a get food items that can feed my family for a week.” he said in an emotional outpouring as the middle aged man became obviously irritated.

Rice was also observed to have jumped from #2,500 per rubber to a whooping #5,000 while a rubber of beans currently sells for as high as #6,500 as against its price of #1,500 from 5 years ago.
