Ecological Concerns: ADYA Zone E Chair, Council Boss, Auchi Poly Mgt. to Collaborate, Address Flooding in Iyekhei

On Monday, July 8th, residents of Solo Street in Ekhei Girls were left reeling after a heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in the area. The downpour, which lasted several hours, submerged streets and homes, causing significant damage to property and disrupting daily life for many.

In response to the crisis, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, accompanied by the Iyekhei Chairman and other community stakeholders, visited Solo Street to assess the extent of the damage firsthand. Their presence underscored the severity of the situation and marked the beginning of efforts to provide relief and support to affected residents.

Mr. Alid Oseni Osigbemhe, Iyekhei Youth Chairman, spoke to the ABS team, highlighting collaborative efforts to address the issue. He reported that after the Chairman’s inspection, immediate steps were taken as the Chairman contacted the Rector, prompting the dispatch of the Director of Works to discuss constructing a dam at the polytechnic to mitigate water flow issues contributing to the flooding. In his words ” I accompanied the Council Chairman to acess the damage caused by the recent rain-induced erosion on Solo Street. Following his inspection, the Chairman contacted the Rector, who promptly dispatched the Director of Works to meet with us at the site. After discussions, the Director confirmed that the polytechnic plans to construct a dam to mitigate the impact of water flowing from the polytechnic, which has been causing havoc for the residents of Solo Street”.

This collaborative effort between local government officials, community leaders, and educational institutions underscores a proactive approach to mitigating flood risks in Ekhei Girls’ Solo Street. Residents can anticipate improved resilience against future rainfall-induced challenges through ongoing initiatives like the proposed dam construction.
